The ReBelle Groupon can be used toward merchandise, classes, or equipment rental.

Advent calendars

Every year when December 1st hits it reminds me of one thing- I still don't have an Advent calendar. As a child, my mom would always put our Advent calendar up on December 1st and it was one of my favorite things about the holidays. The calendar we had was handmade of felt with a typed (as in on a typewriter) little poemy thing a the top. There were little yarn ties that held all the treats in place and every night my sister and I would get to untie and fight over the treat for the day. I imagine it was pretty frustrating for my mom, but we really loved it.

As an adult, I am more about the simple beauty of the Advent calendar. For years I have been planning to make one to hang, but have yet to do it. Maybe this will be the year of the Advent calendar. Just in case any of you are thinking about putting together your own, here are a few of my favorite knitted/crocheted Advent calendar patterns for you to enjoy.

Brambles beret

A couple of weeks ago we received our first fall shipment of Malabrigo which included their new Rios yarn. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, Rios is a 4-ply superwash worsted-weight yarn that is, get this, softer than their original worsted. The colors are exactly what you would expect from Malabrigo, but since the yarn base is superwash, the colors are richer and more saturated than their other yarns. In one word, this yarn is AMAZING!! Around the time of the Malabrigo shipment, the new knitty was released and naturally the Brambles beret caught my eye. Originally, I had planned on knitting Brambles out of a single-ply, I love the way cables pop in a single, but somehow I got the idea of knitting it in Rios in my head and I couldn't get it out. All of the colors we ordered were in my personal color palette so instead of antagonizing over picking the right color I went with the color we had most of- Sunset.

The pattern itself was very well written and the progression was logical (obviously written by a math person) and for the first time in quite a while I didn't feel the need to make any changes to the original. I loved this pattern and will likely knit another one in a different size later in the season.

How to start a KAL with Ravelry

Knit-a-longs (KAL) are a great way to learn new techniques while tackling a challenging project with others. I was knitting with some friends last week and someone mentioned that it would be really cool if Ravelry had a feature that allowed you to compare your queue with the queues of your friends so that you could easily find common projects for starting a KAL. A post and an email later we learn that you can compare queues so here is a quick tutorial for you.

First, select the pattern tab and go to the "advanced search" feature listed under the search box. In the advanced search, go to the pattern tab, select "in my queue" and "yes." This will give you all of the patterns currently in your queue.

Next, in the pattern tab select "queued by."

You should end up with a box on the left of your screen with spaces to fill in the ravelry username(s) of the person/people in your KAL. I am just using Sarah, but if I wanted more people I would choose "and" instead of "or" and type in the names and hit "apply."

You should end up with a listing of your common patterns which you can use to decide on a project for a KAL.

This search and comparison can also be done with your favorites, the only difference is that there is no "in my favorites" button so you will go directly to "favorited by" and type your username along with those you are comparing. I would like to throw out a big kudos here to Casey and Jess for putting together such a comprehensive site. Seriously, what did we do before Ravelry?

Here's a picture of a cute dress I just made. It could work as a summer dress or in the fall over pants and a long sleeved shirt. It is an easy pattern, and great for getting into cables. I love the honeycomb pattern at the top! I knit it out of Sierra, which knits up at a larger gague than the pattern calls for. My 2T size came out more like a 3-4T, but that's what I love about kids clothes, as long as you don't make it too small, it will fit them sometime! Ultra Pima

I was excited about Ultra Pima when we got it, and now that I've had a chance to knit with it, I can say that my excitement was completely justified. This yarn is soft, smooth, has a lovely shine and doesn't split. The projects I have knit with it so far are Elenka, from knitty and Feather and Fan Bonnet, a free Ravelry download. I am really happy with both of them, and I think the Ultra Pima does a nice job of showing off the stitch patterns.

We have 18 colors to chose from, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, so I can justify adding more!

Knitwear Design Workshop

Knitwear Design Workshop provides instructions for designing and knitting your own sweaters, tops, skirts and dresses. It begins simply with information about fibers, weights, and stitch patterns and goes on to detail various types of construction, shaping, necklines and finishing techniques. This is the type of book you will turn to time and time again.

Little Experience Kits

We just received a shipment of these fabulous kits. They are aimed at kids, but I think they would be fun for adults too! We have four different knitting kits, three sewing projects and the build-a-birdhouse kit. All the supplies are included, even stuffing and needles and when you are done there are instructions for recycling the packaging into fun things like a swing set for your knit elephant or a rocking chair for your dolly.

With all the snow around here lately I thought you might want to know about the warmest pair of mittens ever. I knit these mittens with Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky on size 2 needles, and I have yet to encounter cold that can get through them. If you want some merely average mittens you can do as the pattern suggests and knit with worsted weight yarn on size 5 needles. The pattern is Norwegian Totoro Mittens by Brella and is available as a free Ravelry download.

Last Minute Gift Classes

To help you with your last minute gift making, we are offering 3 classes with quick gifts to make for your family and friends. Both felting classes are beginner level so no experience is needed and the cabled hat class is an introduction to cables so you just need to know how to knit, purl, and k2tog.

Needle Felted Scarf
First, from 12-2pm learn to make a beautiful needle felted scarf. You start with a silk scarf and needle felt some fun roving onto it. It takes about 4 hours to do the entire 14" x 72" scarf, so this class should have you well on your way. We are offering this class at a really great price, only $15. All your materials are included, but you do need to buy or bring some felting needles and a felting mat (brush style or sponge style) both of which can be purchased in the shop.

Needle Felted Wallet
Next, from 2-4 learn the basics of needle felting designs by making a needle felted wallet. Start with a blank 4" x 6" wallet and felt directly onto it. The designs can be as simple or complex as you desire. One wallet is included with the class and additional wallets can be purchased for $5 each. The class costs $15 and also includes as much roving as you need to finish the wallets you are working on during the class. Bring or buy your own felting needles.

Warm Winter Cabled Hat
Finally, from 4-6 learn to knit cables! We will be knitting a basic cabled hat with chunky yarn on size 15 needles. The hat is knit flat and the only skills you need are knitting, purling, decreasing and seaming. Robyn can knit one in 2 hours, it may take you a bit longer. This is a great new skill for beginners to add. Impress others with your knitting! The class costs $35 and comes with the yarn and needles you need to make the hat.

Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping
In addition to the classes, this Saturday from 2-5pm, Katherine Howe will be offering her lovely gift wrapping services in the shop. All of her papers and supplies are eco-friendly and recyclable and best of all her wrapping prices range from $2-5 with most packages costing around $4 with a percentage of the proceeds going to the Lexington Humane Society. As an added bonus, for every ReBelle bought gift that you have wrapped, we will donate an additional $1 to the Humane Society. This means that for a little more than the price of a gift bag you can support a good cause and avoid the hassle of wrapping your own gifts.

Looking for a baby blanket pattern that is simple, interesting and practical? How about the Star Illusion Blanket. In illusion knitting when you look straight on, it just looks like stripes, but if you look at it from the side the pattern is revealed. It only uses knit and purl, and only one color at a time, so it is simple enough for a beginner. The Star Illusion Blanket is a free pattern on Ravelry and I made it using 6 skeins of Cascade Sierra. Sierra is a cotton/wool blend that is soft and washable, making it a great choice for baby things.

Hoot Water Bottle Cozy

I came up with this cozy idea a few weeks ago when the cold weather really started to set in. I love the idea of portable heat sources that use little energy and allow me to roam freely around my cold house (I generally keep the thermostat at 60 degrees all winter.) The owl cable came from an old Leisure Arts vest pattern I was given a few years ago. This cozy will dress up any standard 2 liter hot water bottle and it will keep it warmer longer. The pattern uses 2 strands of EcoWool held together and is available free in the shop, or you can find it here.

(S)mock Cable Neck Warmer

Mittens, gloves, handwarmers, and armwarmers are great gifts for almost anyone. The sizing is fairly adjustable so there is no reason to measure the recipients and the projects are portable so you can work on them almost anywhere. Here are a few ReBelle and customer favorite patterns to get you started.

Squirrel and Oak Mittens-I love the Norwegian-style mittens and this pair is a personal favorite of mine. These would be great knitted with the new Brown Sheep Lanaloft Sport. There is also a Pirate Mitten design, also by Adrian Bizillia.

Bella's Mittens- Many of you have already made these mittens, but with another Twilight movie on its way I thought they would be worth mentioning. There is no more Cascade 109, but these mittens would be lovely and very luxurious knitted out of the Baby Alpaca Chunky.

Snowball's Chance in Hell- A local design that would look great knitted with the Brown Sheep Lanaloft sport.

Fetching and Dashing- these great female and male fingerless mitts use less than a skein of Cascade 220, and are a sophisticated gift idea for a couple in your life.

Not your basic scarf ideas

For those of you who love to knit scarves, here are a few ideas beyond your basic garter stitch scarf.

Noro Striped Scarf- While this scarf looks amazing using Noro yarn, the technique can be used with any two contrasting variegate yarns. Different yarns will give you different effects.

My So Called Scarf- We recommend this pattern to many of our beginning knitters. It's a two row repeat so you can put it down and know exactly where you are when you pick it up. The stitch techique sounds a little weird as written, but there is a great video on youtube that better illustrates what you are supposed to do.

Drop Stitch Scarf- I like this pattern because it looks really interesting and because of the dropped stitches it knits up pretty quickly.

Scrappy Lengthwise Scarf- This is a personal favorite of mine because it uses up lots of yarn scraps and if you leave tails at the ends for fringe, there are no ends to weave in.

Quickie Cowl- A super quick project that can be made with a single skein of our new luscious Baby Alpaca Chunky.

Instant Gratification Scarf- Another scarf that uses a dropped stitch pattern with a chunky yarn to give you a super quick knit. Uses 1-2 skeins of Malabrigo Aquarella.

Entrelac Scarf- For those of you looking for a bit of a challenge, this is the project for you. Depending on the yarn used, this scarf can be masculine or femine.

Great patterns for our crocheters

We are going to focus on the crocheters this week. Here are some free crochet patterns we love to make you holiday gift making a little easier.

Scarves
the Wavelength- A sideways openwork scarf that works up fairly quickly and would look amazing in Noro Silk Garden Sock or Zaunderball.

Tea Scarf- feminine without being lacy. This scarf can be made with one skein of Malabrigo Worsted.

Mossy Cowl- This cowl crocheted using an L hook and cobweb yarn comes out fluffy and warm with Cascade Kid Seta.

Swirls Cap- This cute little cap would be great in Brown Sheep worsted, you'll even have enough left over for some matching fingerless mitts.

Great sock knitting ideas

Every Friday for the next few months, we are going to provide a little inspiration for your holiday gift craft by featuring free patterns and yarn ideas. In honor of Soctoberfest, here are a few of our favorite sock patterns.

Hat-heel sock- from the current issue of Knitty. If you are looking for a new adventure in sock knitting, look no further. This sock is knit starting at the heel by making what looks a bit like and earflap hat and then stitches are picked up to knit the foot and the cuff.

Clandestine sock- also from the new knitty. We love this Cookie A. pattern as well as the yarn that goes with it. These socks combine several techniques in one pattern so they will keep you interested from start to finish.

Jaywalker- a favorite sock pattern by Grumperina. The repeat is easy to memorize and the pattern really jumps out when knit with self-striping yarns such as Zauberball or Trekking.

Cable Twist Socks- we recommend these worsted-weight socks for first-time sock knitters looking for something a little more interesting than plain stockinette stitch. They are great knit with Cascade 220SW.

Knee Socks
The October KAL theme is knee socks so here are a few of our favorite knee sock patterns.

The February Baby Sweater

I just finished knitting a February Baby Sweater for the shop. For those of you who don't know, this is an Elizabeth Zimmerman pattern from the Knitter's Almanac and in typical EZ fashion was very simple construction. The sweater is meant to be done on two needles with a seam up both sleeves so if you don't like knitting in the round you can do it that way. On the other hand, if you would rather avoid the seaming you can pick up stitches and knit the sleeves in the round. Either way, knitted with less than two skeins of Elsebeth Lavold's Silky Wool this sweater makes a very inexpensive and elegant baby gift for any baby on your list.

S. Limestone Construction Updates

For those of you who don't know, and even for those who do, S. Limestone St will be undergoing some major construction between the Avenue of Champions and Vine St over the course of the next year starting on July 22. The street will be open to one lane of traffic at certain points in the process, but there won't be any street parking in the front so to better help you get to us below are instructions for accessing us during the first phase of the construction. We will post updates as we know them. Thank you for your support during this difficult time, it really means a lot to us.

Update: The intersection at S. Limestone and the Avenue of Champions is now open so if you are coming from Nicholasville Rd or Euclid you can take Winslow to Jersey St.

North Lexington (including I-64 & I-75): Take Broadway or Upper St, turn left on Pine St (immediately after Maxwell), right on Jersey St and our parking lot is on the left side immediately after the McDonald's.

South Lexington: Take Broadway, turn right on Pine St, right on Jersey St and our parking lot is on the left side immediately after the McDonald's.

East Lexington: Take Main or High Street, turn left onto S. Upper, left on Pine St (immediately after Maxwell), right on Jersey St and our parking lot is on the left side immediately after the McDonald's.

West Lexington: Take Vine St, turn right onto S. Upper, left on Pine St (immediately after Maxwell), right on Jersey St and our parking lot is on the left side immediately after the McDonald's.

Additional Parking: In addition to our parking lot, there are metered spaces on Pine and Jersey St. and on the weekends the UK Jersey St lot is open to the public.

This is the map of the construction area (in red) and the official detour in yellow. For most of the construction you will be able to take S. Lime to the Ave of Champions, turn left and then take a right on Jersey St which will take you to our parking lot.

For the first month of this project the intersection at Ave of Champions will be closed. For this time period you will have to access Jersey St from the West which means via Pine or Maxwell which can both be accessed via Upper and Broadway.

The city has also put together a site complete with business and parking maps.

This week in the shop we have lots of new fiber for the spinners and needle felters. There are 16 new colors of solid fibers in smaller weights especially for needle felting. For the spinners we have several new natural undyed fibers in 2-8oz quantities as well as some amazing color and fiber blends and some new colors in the hand dyed BFL braids.

Above are the merino/tussah blends and the merino blends, both available in 4oz bags. If all of that wonderful natural fibery goodness wasn't enough, we also added 4 colors of firestar glittery nylon (one of which is dyeable) to blend into other fibers for spinning or to add a little sparkle to your needle felting.

Chunky Alpaca

We have had many requests for a chunky alpaca and after looking at several different brands, we found frog tree. Not only do they have beautifully soft alpaca yarn at a reasonable price, but they are also a non-profit. They buy their fiber from socially and environmentally conscious non-profit groups in Peru and Bolivia. Any profits that they make go to benefit educational projects. We are carrying their hand dyed chunky multi-tone alpaca, 108 yds/100g in seven colors and we have some variegated colors in the same weight. (Sadly, we won't be able to restock the variegates because they are discontinuing them, so get them while you can!)

It's that time of year again, time for new yarn. The first one to come through our door is O-Wool Classic 2-ply. It's a light weight organic wool 198 yds/50g. We have all 12 colors and they make a lovely palette.

What makes this yarn organic? The sheep are fed organic food. No pesticides, hormones or genetic engineering are used on the land or the animals. Only biodegradable scouring agents are used and all dyes are free of heavy metals and aromatic amines. On average, for every pound of organic wool produced, 2 acres of land are sustained under organic management! What a great reason to knit with organic yarn!

Silk Garden Sock Yarn

The Silk Garden Sock yarn is here!! It is awesome!! I am about 3 inches into a sock and already I am thinking of all the projects I can possibly knit with it. It is much softer than the Kureyon Sock yarn. It's a heavier sock yarn, 327 yards/100g, with a recommended needle size of 5-6, although a size 3 will make a nice sock. The fiber content is 40% lamb’s wool, 25% silk, 25% nylon and 10% kid mohair. We have 5 fabulous colors.

Alphabet Stitch Markers

In addition to all of the Fair Trade bags and clothing, this summer we are adding several independent artisans to our offerings. Many of these designers make limited addition and one-of-a-kind items so you know that you are getting something special.

We just received some great hand printed tote bags by Mary Ink from Nashville. We have six styles to choose from- green trees, hedgehogs, Russian nesting dolls, superbirds, blue bird, and pink forest all printed on both sides of the tote with high-quality inks.

We also received some shirts from a local artist- Jones Art + Design from here in Lexington. They are American apparel shirts that have been hand screened with some great designs. There are eleven designs and each one is completely unique.

Cozy Malabrigo Leg Warmers

This is a great accessory for all that cold weather we've been having. The malabrigo is super soft and will keep your legs toasty. A fairly simple stitch pattern with some ribbing, eyelets and a cable-ish effect (contains no actual cables) makes for an easy, but rewarding knit. The pattern is free with yarn purchase and contains instructions for knitting them flat or in the round.

ReBelle's New Year's Resolutions

One of our resolutions for 2008 is to find replacements for products we carry that are made in sweatshops. About 90-95% of our store is already sweatshop-free, but there area few notions and yarns that we need to find alternatives for.
Our other resolution, is to get more goods by local and independent artisans into the store. Almost 15% of our store features items made in Lexington and surrounding areas. Buying handmade items from independent artisans and small companies gives us a warm fuzzy feeling inside and we want to offer more items both from local area artisans and from crafty people around the country.

This Top-Down Raglan Cardigan is a surprisingly easy project, perfect for those tackling their first sweater. It's top-down, so you can try it on as you go. Also, there's no seaming. This one was made with Silk Garden by Noro, but it can be made with most any worsted or aran weight yarn. The pattern is free from CosmicPluto.

Also, we got a new shipment of Malabrigo with a few new worsted colors and some new Aquarella colors as well. Farmhouse's Lumpy Bumpy and Tempted Yarn's Sock Yarn have been so popular that we've already gotten more, so there's a few new colors of those as well.

Apparently we have been getting so much new stuff, that we haven't had time to tell you about it. We have a sari silk wool blend: 60% wool, 40% recycled silk, 175 yards/100g. Nice and tweedy and it felts. We have 5 colors, they were sold out of quite a few, so we hope to add some more later.
Malabrigo laceweight. 100% Baby Merino, super soft, 470 yds/50g. 9 colors, a couple more on the way.Not a new yarn, but new colors of Farmhouse Yarn's Lumpy Bumpy. It's one of my favorites, and the new colors have my brain searching for a project.

Tempted Yarns, new classes, and the wish list service

We just received a shipment of handdyed sock yarns from Stacey at Tempted Yarns. We have six colorways: Bordello, Gratitude, Punk Junkie, Fishnets, Shock Rocker, and Guerrilla Girls and they are all fabulous. Come in and see them for yourself!!

Due to popular demand, we have added several new dye classes and gift classes for the holiday season; you can see the updated calendar on our Web site. Also, Amanda will be teaching another drop spinning class on Saturday, November 17. The class is $35 which includes a drop spindle and an ounce of roving for you to take home and practice with. Call or drop by the store to sign up.

Cotton Sock Yarn Is Here!

We've had a lot of requests for cotton sock yarns and we finally have some. Cara is self-striping and is 35% cotton 30% modal(viscose) and 35% acrylic. Sockina Cotton is self-patterning and is 55% cotton, 25% nylon and 20% acrylic. We have all the colorways, so come pick some out for your wool-sensitive friends!

Simple Shawl

We combined Copa and Kid Seta to make this simple, elegant shawl. It is soft and light, perfect for cool evenings or to accent an outfit. This project is suitable for beginners and knits up quickly on size 11 needles. Pattern free with yarn purchase.
